Cyclone Gabrielle Response in Hawke’s Bay

On February 13th 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle struck the Hawke’s Bay region, causing widespread devastation. Fertile land was destroyed, homes and businesses were lost, and the storm severely damaged the local stormwater network. Immediate action was required to manage the floodwaters and restore critical infrastructure.

Challenge:
The primary challenge was to quickly mobilise and deploy pumps, hoses, and accessories to manage the floodwaters and clear the damaged stormwater network. This required coordination with freight companies, customers, the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, and Civil Defence. The urgency of the situation demanded rapid response and efficient logistical operations to support the flood relief efforts.

Solution:
Prime Pump responded by deploying 36 flood relief pumps and kilometers of hose to the affected areas in Napier and Gisborne. The company worked tirelessly with various stakeholders to ensure timely delivery and operation of the equipment. Staff members worked around the clock to maintain and fuel the pumps, and three staff members were temporarily relocated to Napier to support the clean-up efforts.

Result:
The immediate task of managing floodwaters and clearing the stormwater network was successfully accomplished. The efforts of Prime Pump, along with local support and collaboration with the Council Works Group and other contractors, played a crucial role in restoring key infrastructure. 

While the initial clean-up is complete, future proofing the Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne against severe-weather events like Gabrielle is ongoing. With a newly-opened branch in Onekawa, Prime Pump in committed to stormwater management efforts in the region.
