A well pointing system uses a series of small-diameter wellpoints installed in a line or ring around the excavation. Each wellpoint is a screened inlet connected to a riser pipe, which comes up to a header main that runs back to the wellpointing pump.
Prime Fluid pairs this layout with positive displacement piston pumps that deliver consistent high pressure, auto-prime, and can move a mixture of water and air without restriction. This combination lowers the groundwater level around the excavation and creates a more stable, workable site in New Zealand’s variable soils.
In a typical wellpointing set-up:
- Wellpoints are the screened inlets that sit in the ground and draw groundwater into the system
- Riser pipes or risers are the vertical pipes that connect each wellpoint up to the surface
- Swing joints are the flexible connections between each riser and the header main, typically incorporating a valve to allow flow from each wellpoint to be adjusted or isolated as required.
Prime Fluid’s range of wells and accessories include stainless-steel and PVC wells, hoses, pipes and swingarms. These items are selected to work with standard wellpoint components, so you can set up and fine-tune the system around actual site conditions.
Wedge-wire and slotted screen wellpoints are used to keep sand and fines out of the system while still allowing high flow into each wellpoint. The slots or wedge-wire profile create a controlled intake area so groundwater can enter freely but larger particles are kept in the formation, which helps protect pumps and maintain performance over longer runs.

A jetting lance is the handheld pipe or lance used to install wellpoints. It connects to a high-pressure jetting pump and directs water into the ground to fluidise the soil so each wellpoint and riser can be jetted down to its design depth.
